Symbolic Art Collection
Our new and exclusive Symbolic Art Collection is packed full of fun, creative t-shirts. We are launching this collection with designs depicting four ideas: - Peace, Joy, Strength and Friendship.
We actually used the technique of symbolism art to depict each of these ideas. Symbolism art is the practice of using a design or word to represent an abstract idea, action, person, place or object.
Let me give you a quick history and definition of symbolism art and tell you how you probably use the technique yourself every day.
History
The term symbolism was coined in 1886 by a French critic named Jean Moréas who used the term to describe the poetry of two poets named Stéphane Mallarmé and Paul Verlaine. It was soon applied to visual art where artists wanted their pictures to depict a meaning beyond just the figures they drew. There was a whole symbolism movement which took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
One of the earliest artists to use this style is French painter Odilon Redon. The above painting titled flower clouds (painted 1903), is typical of the symbolic style of painting for which Redon is well known.
This painting is Van Gogh's famous The Starry Night (painted 1889). the symbolism in this painting shows the vast power of nature.
Symbolism used in Everyday Life
Symbolism is now used in numerous areas of our everyday lives. This includes in our language, written works and even in our technology. For example, when you read a book, symbolic images are added to the story to convey a message or to work as part of the theme.
